"All the reading she had done had given her a view of life that they had never seen."
~ Roald Dahl, Matilda
Shelby’s Book Fund promotes children’s literacy and places a special focus on children impacted by trauma, abuse, or loss. Children living with these circumstances often struggle to understand a myriad of complicated and painful feelings – it’s simply beyond their tender emotional capacity. Many struggle as they spend less time living fully into childhood and more time protecting themselves from the possibility of chaos and pain.
I know this because I was one of those kids. The covers of a book became a sort of hideout, a shelter where I could safely distance myself from the confusion and fear. Turning the pages of a story was my own private retreat, a space for my imagination roam free, where I could believe in things like love… and I could fill my heart with possibilities of happy endings. Reading was a place where it was safe for me to be a child. And now, I hope to provide opportunities for other children to experience the same.
You may be wondering… who’s Shelby? Shelby is a character in Finding Emma’s Heart. Emma meets Shelby shortly after she loses her magic heart rock on the beach. As they search for Emma’s lost treasure, Shelby inspires Emma’s to remain open, be creative, use her imagination, and experience love and support from her community. Shelby exemplifies what I hope to bring to the young minds and hearts through the sharing of inspirational stories. She also has a connection to an even bigger dream I have! You’ll meet her soon – she’s almost ready to debut!
.How can you help? We are hoping to raise enough funds to donate between 750 and 1,000 copies at the time of publication. I am donating a portion of proceeds generated from the courses, workshops, and coaching services offered on lovecommakate.com. AND there’s opportunity for you to either donate directly or be one of the first participants in the Buy-a-book / Give-a-book program.
